Origins
Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company made goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products from other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's global market share.
In the 90s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve its customers and boost profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same approach in its sales strategy. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate on the toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It has exhibitions on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and even bath units. In an additional gallery, you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum also includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You might expect a band with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but it was not without its difficulties. The record companies put the band under pressure to release a hit single or they would drop them. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experiences, as the band members had been session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.
The album starts out hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually works very well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than earlier recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour to promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the first album by the band not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
