Watch Out: How Toto Asia Is Taking Over And How To Stop It

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities in the overseas market and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could be able to read the words. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the first half, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, contemporary urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to managing its supply chain and applied the same methodology in its sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example, has a powerful tornado flush that is more eco green than traditional toilets. Toto uses recycled water for its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It features exhibits on Toto’s seminal products as well as their evolution, group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and other products like bath units. In another gallery, visitors can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum even has a bathroom that includes a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the group did sessions for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The group was formed as a four-piece and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or they would rescind the album. Toto was able to achieve this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences. Before forming the group, the members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic signature has since become the standard for  pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also contains more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and should sound completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
